How to check live train running status in India

Scheduled times on your ticket are just that — scheduled. Once a train leaves its origin station, its actual position depends on traffic, weather, maintenance blocks and a dozen other things NTES tracks in real time. "Running status" is what tells you where the train is against that schedule right now.

All you need is the train number, which is printed on your ticket. Open Train Status, type in the 5-digit number (or the train's name if you don't have it handy), and you'll get the last reported station, current delay, and the next station it's headed to.

If you're checking a few hours before departure, the source station is usually shown as "not yet started" — that's expected, since running status only exists once a train has actually left its starting point. Once it's moving, the status updates as the train passes each reporting point along its route.

One thing to watch for: a train can be diverted onto a different line during disruptions (floods, track work, accidents elsewhere). When that happens, a few scheduled stops get skipped and others get added — the status page will call this out explicitly rather than silently showing the original route.
